Yamunotri Dham is one among the four dhams situated in the Great Himalayas. The sanctified shrine of Yamunotri is situated on the western side of Garhwal region lying in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. It is situated at an altitude of about 3185 metres and hold an important place in Hindu Pilgrimage Tour.

Yamunotri is surrounded by glaciers, snowy peaks is also famous for its thermal springs and picturesque meadows. Yamunotri is the source of Yamuna River and first site of Char Dham Tour. According to a legend, Asit Muni, a revered sage, used to reside here. The Yamunotri Temple features a stunning black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna and a white stone marble of Goddess Ganga. The actual source is a frozen lake of ice & glacier (Champasar glacier also known as Yamunotri Glacier) located on the Kalind Mountain at the height of 4421 m above sea level, about 1 km further up, is not reached easily as it is not accessible and hence the shrine has been located on the foot of the hill. The approach is extremely difficult and pilgrims therefore offer veneration at the temple itself.

Every year thousands of devotes begin with Char Dham Yatra from Haridwar which originates form darshan at Yamunotri Dham and proceeds with Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath Dhams respectively. As per belief, a dip in River Yamuna is said to protect from untimely death as Yamraj is brother of River Yamuna. After taking a holy dip, pilgrims proceed with a trek to reach The Yamunotri Temple. To reach, ponis and palanquins can be hired or you can trek on 3 km trek beginning from Janki Chatti.

Best Time to visit Yamunotri Dham is from April to June and September to November depending on opening & closing dates every year. Monsoon season can be avoided due to heavy rainfall. Nearby attractions to explore near Yamunotri are Kharsali, Saptarshi Kund, Hanuman Chatti & base camp of Janki Chatti. It takes around 10 to 12 days to complete the Yatra but due to lack of time, pilgirms prefer other easy options. Helicopter services for Chardham can be booked for a 4-5 days trip from Haridwar.

The best route to visit Yamunotri is via Dehardun and Barkot. But if you are travelling through Haridwar-Rishikesh then the road to Yamunotri diverts from Dharasu bifurcation point. Yamunotri is well connected to Haridwar, Dehradun, Chamba, Tehri, Barkot, Hanuman Chatti and Janki Chatti.

Yamunotri Dham is located at 230 kms from Haridwar and 412 kms from Delhi. It is well connected by metalled road with Haridwar & Delhi till Janaki Chatti. Flights are available from Delhi to Dehradun (Jolly Grant Aiport) which is 200 kms away from Yamunotri. From Haridwar, one can board bus to Yamunotri or hire a car.
